5 steps for studying scripture

1. Read it

If you want to know what God's Word says, you have to READ IT.  This is the most basic and obvious step, but one that people tend to forget.  For Koinonia, your goal is to read the passage at least once every day for a week.

2. Outline it

There are many different ways to outline...we want SIMPLE!  Take the passage of scripture you are reading and break it up into thoughts.  Usually there are just a few thoughts in a chapter.  This will help you see the concepts in the passage, instead of just a bunch of words

For example:

John 1

Verses 1-18 - Jesus came to the world to be light but many people rejected Him

Verses 19-28 - John was questioned about why  he was baptizing

Verses 25-34 - John saw Jesus and knew he was the Son of God

Verses 35-51 - Andrew, Peter, Philip, & Nathanael followed Jesus

3. Observe it

Pay attention to the DETAILS!  Sometimes things are repeated, and sometimes the wording may be different than how you would have said it.  These things are there so that our attention is drawn to the main point.

4. Interpret it

After you know what's there, it's now time to UNDERSTAND what's there.  This does not mean you understand every single thing in the passage, but you will understand God's message.

5. Apply it

After you know what God is saying, you need to LIVE it.  It is our duty as Christians to understand God's simple plan for our lives and be obedient to it.  As James tells us, the Bible is a mirror that shows us what is not God honoring in our life.  After we know what those things are, we must take action to please our heavenly Father.
